Print-Friendly Wi‑Fi QR Codes

Follow this checklist to get reliable scans on business cards, table tents, menus, or posters.
Quick checklist
- Export at 800–1200 px (or SVG) for print; keep a 4+ module quiet zone.
- Use dark on light colors; avoid gradients and glossy paper that adds glare.
- Test with one iOS and one Android device under the lighting where it will be used.
Choose the right size
Business cards and handouts
Use an 800–1000 px PNG or SVG. Keep the QR at least 2.5 cm wide and leave breathing room around it so fingers don’t cover the finder patterns.
Table tents, menus, and flyers
Target 1000–1400 px. Place the code on a calm background and avoid folding lines. Add a small caption like “Scan to join Wi‑Fi” to set context.
Posters and signage
Go 1400–2000 px or SVG. Keep it near eye level, not near busy textures or lights. Maintain a large quiet zone for distance scans.
Contrast and color
- High contrast wins: charcoal or black on white or light gray.
- Avoid pastel-on-pastel or heavy gradients that blur modules.
- If you add a logo, keep it small and away from the three corner markers; raise error correction to Q/H to compensate.
Paper, finishes, and placement
- Prefer matte or uncoated stock to cut glare; avoid lamination over the code.
- Keep the code flat—no folds across it and no wrapping around curved surfaces.
- For restaurants, place away from spills; for events, keep within arm’s reach, not behind glass.
Testing before printing in bulk
- Print a single proof at final size.
- Scan with current iOS and Android camera apps in the actual lighting.
- Check for glare, low contrast, or cramped margins. Adjust quiet zone/margin and re-export if scans fail.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Compressing or resizing the PNG in design tools—place it at 100% scale.
- Putting the QR over photos or patterns that reduce contrast.
- Printing too small (under 2 cm) or with tiny margins.
FAQ
PNG or SVG?
Use PNG for fast workflows and most printers. Use SVG if you need sharp scaling for large formats or if designers will resize it in vector tools.
What margin should I use?
Set at least a 4-module quiet zone in the generator. Increase to 6–8 modules for small prints like business cards.
Can I brand the QR?
Yes—light branding is fine. Keep contrast high, avoid covering the corner squares, and raise error correction to Q/H before downloading.
