How to make a WiFi QR code sign that scans reliably
Use a guest network
Keep visitors away from your main network and rotate the guest password when staff, bookings, or events change.
Keep contrast high
Dark QR modules on a light background scan best. Avoid glossy paper, busy artwork, and low-contrast brand colors.
Include fallback text
Show the SSID and password under the code so guests can still connect if their camera cannot scan. If either starts or ends with ordinary spaces, the sign adds outer quotation marks and states the leading and trailing space counts. Keep those spaces but do not type the added outer quotes.
Print large enough
Keep a white border of at least four QR modules on every side. Start with a generously sized code for the viewing distance and test the actual print; there is no one size that guarantees every camera will scan.
How to print an A4 or US Letter WiFi sign
- Replace the fictional example with your guest SSID and password. Check spaces, capital letters, hidden-network setting and security type against the router.
- Select A4 or US Letter, then choose Print / Save PDF. In the browser dialog, choose the same paper size and portrait orientation. Disable browser headers and footers if they appear.
- Check the print preview. This sign is sized to fit within both paper formats with margins; it is not a full-bleed poster. If your printer changes the scale, check that the complete sign stays on one page.
- Print one copy on plain matte paper. Avoid cutting away the white QR border, covering the code with a logo, or placing it behind reflective glass.
- Scan the printed sign from the actual guest position on an iPhone and an Android device. Confirm that the network name is correct, then test joining. Keep the typed network details available as a fallback.
A cafe or rental example
Use a dedicated guest network, a headline such as “Guest WiFi”, a short “Scan to join” instruction and a note telling guests who to contact. Place a cafe sign where customers can read it without blocking service; place a rental sign in the welcome area, not in a public-facing window.
A WiFi QR code shares connection details; it does not create the network, add internet access or bypass a hotel’s captive portal. A visitor may still need to accept the venue’s sign-in terms after joining.

Can I download the WiFi sign as an image?
Yes. Generate the sign, then use Download PNG to save a high-resolution sign image.
Does this upload my WiFi password?
The generator code creates the QR and sign in your browser and does not include the SSID, password or sign text in its custom analytics events. This page also uses the site’s existing analytics service; see the privacy notice. A downloaded or printed QR code still exposes the encoded credentials to anyone who can read it.
Should I show the password on the sign?
Fallback text helps guests who cannot scan. This sign includes it, so use a guest network and share it only with intended visitors. Hiding the text would not make the QR password secret.
Do I need a new QR code after changing my WiFi password?
Yes. Generate a new code using the updated password and replace every old sign, saved image and welcome document. The QR contains the original details; it does not automatically update when you change your router.
Why will an iPhone or Android phone not join?
First check whether the camera recognizes the code. If it does not, try a brighter location without glare, clean the camera lens, enlarge the code and check its white border. If the code is recognized but joining fails, compare the SSID and password exactly, confirm the network is in range, and try joining manually. Security modes, hidden networks, enterprise login and captive portals can need device-specific steps.
What is the SVG download for?
It is a vector version of the QR code only, useful in a design or print application. Keep its square shape, black modules and complete white border. Use Download PNG for the complete sign. Neither format makes a printed code update automatically.
Does this support WPA3 or enterprise WiFi?
This tool offers common WPA/WPA2-Personal, legacy WEP and open-network payloads. Compatibility with WPA3-only networks is device-dependent; enterprise identities and certificates are outside this tool’s scope. Keep the router’s appropriate security settings and offer manual instructions when QR joining is unsupported.
